I have recently noticed some bluish veins showing on my legs when I wear my bike shorts. Also heaviness and swelling in my legs …
Those might be spider veins – small, thin, mostly blue, red or purple lines that show up like a weblike network of blood vessels on the surface of your skin. Spider veins are usually not painful or harmful, but they are already a mild form of varicose veins. Both conditions are due to a condition called venous insufficiency. And result from having weakened or damaged vein valves and can cause heavy feeling in the legs and swelling of the legs and ankles.
Always consult a doctor for a diagnosis.
I thought only women get varicose veins?
It is not unusual for men to suffer from them: About 10-40% of men have varicose veins, and about 21 % of male adults over 50 years of age suffer from varicose veins as well, not only women.
At my age? I am only 35! How come?
The risk factors for superficial venous diseases such as spider veins and varicose veins can be numerous C, but it is a good idea to start by assessing your lifestyle: Check if you are overweight, or sitting quite a lot, for extended periods, (such as in your job, or driving). If you also smoke, that spells bad news for your leg health, because smoking and venous diseases are closely related.
Always consult a doctor for a diagnosis.
Smoking – I tried to quit a few times, without success. What is the correlation?
Smoking is one of the leading causes of vein diseases, because it causes your blood vessels to constrict (ever noticed your hands and feet getting cold after a cigarette? That is why.) This means less room for your blood to travel through your body – which can lead to it pooling in your veins, causing unsightly spider veins and varicose veins.

I also noticed I have been more prone to bruising during sports recently.
Bruising may also be one of the symptoms sign of varicose veins D, which are a result of chronic venous insufficiency. Good to know: You can treat subcutaneous hematoma and traumas (such as from minor sports injuries) with Lioton Gel. Thanks to its active ingredient heparin, it can help relieve the pain and prevent the bruise from spreading.
Always see a doctor for a diagnosis.
What can I do in general against my symptoms of venous insufficiency?
Exercising to improve circulation and muscle tone is a good idea, as is watching your weight , so if you like cycling, perfect, keep on doing it! Another thing you can do is avoid working in a sitting (and standing) position for long periods of time: change your sitting or standing position regularly, to keep the blood flowing in your veins. So try moving around from your desk more often, or taking breaks when driving over hours.
Any other tips?
Also, using a gel containing a high concentration of the active ingredient heparin (such as Lioton 1000 Gel) may help your legs: Heparin can help
a) reduce the symptoms of superficial venous insufficiency by improving microcirculation and reducing the pain and swelling that comes with varicose veins and superficial venous disease with its fast mechanism of action.
b) relieve symptoms of sports injuries such as bruises and hematomas 1 – so why not make a habit of taking it with you in your sports bag?
